My dad has some Savings Bonds that he would like to cash in. The problem is that he is in the hospital with kidney failure and can't go to a bank. How does one go about doing this?

Why does the U.S. Treasury finance part of the national debt with Savings Bonds rather than with Treasury notes and bonds that are much cheaper? T-bonds with a maturity of 5/15/30 are trading with a yield of about 4.7% this morning while the rate on I Bonds is 6.73%.

I am the beneficiary of my brother's estate. He owned Series E Savings Bonds that were registered with him as sole owner and no beneficiary. Can these bonds be registered in my name, thus escaping any taxation until I redeem the bonds?

So if I have I bonds that are over a year old and the next I bond inflation rate does come in at 0%, would it make more sense to wait three months, then cash them in? Or should I hang on for another six months to see if the CPI increases?
